Informational Interview: Person Interviewed: Darrell Streeter from Footballville Darrell Streeter was born and raised in Miami, FL. After graduating high school from Miami Norland Senior High School. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corp. After spending several years in the Corp, the devil dog returned home to Miami where he began to work for Pepsi. Streeter also became a Correctional Officer (CO) at Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. After leaving his career as a CO, Streeter became the owner and founder of Footballville. Footballville is a South Florida’s #1 football source. They cover the top football players in the Nation from youth to the pros. Footballville is the home of Caneville #1 South Florida High School and Youth football. They also cover the Miami Hurricanes but are not employed by the University of Miami. During the interview Darrell Streeter was asked the following questions with replies: Q: What made you want to break into the sports industry? A: “When I came back to Miami, I realized that football in South Florida was on a different level after experiencing football in various states. I felt that it was something people needed to see. The pageantry of football down here. At first, I started off covering youth football then I eventually worked my way up to high school. YouTube, Twitter, and Instagram had just begun to become popular. Once I understood how social media works, I used it to market Footballville to gain a bigger following.” Q: What kinds of skills, personal qualities, and experience would you say are most important for success in this field? A: “Not caring what people and believing in yourself. Understanding that once you become a talking head, people are going to challenge you, throw rocks and just not care about what they say about you. You must have creativity and foresight when marketing. You also must have people skills i.e., the ability to talk to people. Most of the time, people don’t know what they like until you show it to them.” Q: What are some challenges you’ve faced while working in the sports industry? A: “Because I didn’t go to college for business or journalism, I had to get it off the muscle. For a long time, sitting in a room amongst qualified people, I felt like I didn’t belong. But I took advantage of the things I did have.” Q: What steps would you recommend I take to prepare to break into the sports industry? A: “Everything is based off relationships. If you’re trying to become the Athletic Director at the University of Miami, I would advise you to volunteer to help the Athletic Department with whatever they need you to do.
