For this weeks discussion I decided to talk about Buddhism as a religious group that is different than my own.  Siddhartha Gautama, better known as the Buddha, established Buddhism in the fifth century B.C, and found enlightenment by renunciating his position and fortune in order to live a modest life as a monk (History.com, 2020).  Buddhism was born as a result of his attempts to pass on his knowledge and help others to do the same.  Most Buddhists are found in Asia’s eastern and southern areas.  Buddhism is divided into various traditions, each with its own set of practices.  Even if theism is present in various Buddhist traditions, it is not considered essential to Buddhism itself.  As a result, Buddhism views existence as a series of ever-changing processes that may be utilized to better themselves.  The mind is the most important tool for transforming one’s life, and Buddhism has devised several techniques for doing just that.  However, the most essential thing that Buddhists do is meditate, which is a means to cultivate more favorable mental states like calmness, focus, awareness, and pleasant feelings like kindness (History.com, 2020).  Involvement with a specific meditation practice allows one to become familiar with the patterns and habits of the mind, and the practice also provides a method of cultivating new and more positive ways of being (History.com, 2020).  These concentrated and peaceful states of mind may become deeply calming and energizing with practice and patience. Such encounters may have a profound influence on the way one views the world and one’s place in it.  For someone like myself that has no true religion, I can appreciate the ideology of what Buddhism brings into people’s lives, and the dedication required to become a Buddhist.  With that being said I do not feel I have that desire and will to push myself to devote my life to Buddhism’s rituals that consist of the their three main elements:  recitation, chanting and the making of offerings (History.com, 2020).
