Doctoral education programs play a major role in preparing students to practice at the most advanced level of Education. The program has, for instance, provided me with evidence-based strategies that improve practice in the early childhood field. Developing a working professional relationship with the committee chair is also pivotal in aligning my studies into the curricula and coursework, especially in areas such as leadership, health care policy, systems, and quality improvement. In light of the above, there are various steps that I plan to take to establish a productive and professional relationship with the chair (Webb & Barret, 2014). First, I will develop a collaborative plan, which will emphasize on frequent communication with the chair and committee members. This will provide me with the opportunity to realign my evidence-based study into practice (Webb & Barret, 2014).  Additionally, I will ensure that I build trust with the members by developing a cordial relationship with them. This will enable me to learn how to lead, communicate, and collaborate with intra- and inter-professional teams. Furthermore, I will engage in activities that are geared towards seeking their guidance in every research step that I make. This will provide me with a professional network that has the potential to influence my perceptions of my learning environment positively (Webb & Barret, 2014).

            I believe that establishing a professional relationship with the chair will mold me into becoming a reflective practitioner. Seeking feedback from them, for instance, plays a pivotal role in developing my professional knowledge and work-based research (Raymond, n.d.). Additionally, the inter-professional relationship and communication will be important for the efficacious transmission and reception of ideas from the chair and committee members. This will also go a long way in creating and maintaining a conducive learning atmosphere. Other rapport building behaviors that I plan to employ include attentive and listening behavior, common grounding practices, courteous traits, connecting behaviors, and information sharing behavior. Common grounding behaviors refer to efforts by the doctoral student to show that they are in agreement with the chair and committee (Raymond, n.d.).  I will express my courteous behavior by being considerate and showing that I have the best interests of patients in mind. More specifically, I wish to embrace an information-sharing behavior, which will be instrumental in providing the committee and chair the data required to successfully evaluate and provide me with constructive feedback. In light of the above, maintaining a positive rapport also plays an important role in increasing my motivation and improving my critical thinking skills (Raymond, n.d.).

The relationship between a dissertation chair and a doctoral student is a partnership. The dissertation chair is responsible for offering guidance on how to produce doctoral level, original scholarship in a proposed topic area (Halupa, 2018). In order to maintain this relationship, there are three main areas of focus: professionalism, communication, and conflict management.

One focus for establishing an effective working relationship is communication. This means ensuring there is a clear understanding of the expectations for both the relationship and the work between both chair and candidate. Additionally, it is important for the candidate to share what they would like from the advisor regarding feedback, direction, and psychological support while adjusting according to the chair’s availability. The chair and candidate will work closely to schedule meetings, annual evaluations, feedback reviews, dissertation defense, and other check-ins as needed. Writing a dissertation requires a large degree of discipline, independence, and motivation; therefore, it is important to schedule regular check-ins to avoid isolation and burn out (Black, 2017).  

Another focus for maintaining a positive relationship is professionalism (Ross, 2020). As working professionals, it is critical to establish a level of respect by arriving on time to meetings and appointments or to communicate if changes are needed. Once a meeting is established, it is important to arrive with materials whether this is an agenda, a list of questions, or a hard copy of the portion of the paper to be discussed. Take notes at the meeting and follow through with advice given. In addition, provide requested information such as drafts or other pertinent information in a timely manner. When submitting work, be clear about the type of feedback requested. Finally, both parties should practice patience. Life happens and it is important to establish understanding.

Lastly, handling conflict constructively is also key (Halupa, 2018). The dissertation chair is a professional, and it is important to understand their decision and underlying rationale. If there is a question or misunderstanding, ask questions and submit specific concerns with a rationale for review. It is important for both parties to practice maintaining respect and integrity while also remembering the dissertation chair could help write recommendations long after the degree has been obtained.
