Good Evening,
Researchers usually conduct content analysis to better understand some aspect of the norms, beliefs, or discourse of a particular culture or subculture, not to gain insight into the thoughts, feelings, motivations, or behaviors of individuals (Gordon, 2019). When I consider content analysis in TV shows, movies, commercials, song lyrics, music videos, social media, etc. it is very clear that there is a certain culture being represented. It does not always mean that is how the person truly believes but a snipit of the image they believe fits within the certain culture.
My question for research would be the impact of alcohol purchases specifically related to alcohol in social media. I would research this by measuring images on social media of influencers drinking specific alcohol ie. White Claw, and comparing the time, frequency of those images to purchases made in similar time frames. This would also be possible using surveys asking consumers if they made the purchase after seeing the brand/flavor on social media.

Hello everyone,
Our text states that “content analysis involves the collection and analysis of any type of textural, visual, or audiovisual material” (Gordon, 2016). Similar to existing statistics, content analysis brings together and looks at data that already exist; researchers often conduct content analysis to get a better understanding of some aspects of the norms, beliefs, or discourse of a particular culture or subculture, not to gain insight into the thoughts, feelings, motivations, or behaviors of individuals (Gordon, 2019).
Research question: Has under aged alcohol consumption increased or decreased since the beginning of the COVID pandemic? The types of content I would consider using to gather data would be: the underage individual’s social media accounts (with parental permission of course), local hospitals to see if the number of minors admitted for alcohol poisoning or any other alcohol related admittance had increased, I would reach out to the schools to see if teachers noticed a difference in their students as far as attitudes and other behaviors as well as any suspected or reported alcohol use at school. My goal would be to see if underage consumers were using alcohol as a coping mechanism. Perhaps they were abusing alcohol because they were stuckg stuck at home and unable to surround themselves with friends? I would look at different demographics to see which underage individuals were affected more. My hypothesis would be that children that had the most active social lives before the pandemic would be the ones to be the most adversely affected while those from rural areas or children with less active social lives will have better coping skills pertaining to being alone or at least, not being surrounded by friends on a regular basis.
Sincerely,
-Bradley
