With regards to poverty, we know that poverty can affect a child’s ability to learn in a school setting and lead a productive life. However, poverty is not a soul indicator to a child’s trajectory in life if the 3 entities family community and schools engage one another in meaningful ways. One way the family can initiate collaboration is being forthcoming with their situation. Often, we find that families are either fearful of communicating their needs of support due to society stigmas or being deemed unable to care for their child or children bases on finical status. The second way families can overcome poverty, is to support and communicate the power of education. In most cases families who are in poverty focus on more of the finical needs, they have very little engagement with the importance of education. Lastly families in poverty need to ensure they are working with the schools to support their child’s education needs.

Schools can address the issue of poverty by serving as an anchor for the community meaning schools can gather the supports of local businesses to provide materials and clothes for children who are in need. A lot of times families in need do not have time to find supports, so the schools can serve as a liaison between the families and the community to provide supports to the families in poverty, something like a wraparound service because schools are typically viewed as a safe zone. Regardless of economic status we need to make sure schools maintain high expiations for children who are living in poverty, because a child lives in poverty does not mean a child is unable to learn.

The community can address poverty by openly providing resources that they may have; it could be something as simple as a local restaurant having extra food and working with the school could help families in poverty. Also looking for opportunities to gainfully employ members in a certain community would be a start to ending poverty. Things like scholarships food drives clothe drives and backpack drives would assist with mitigating the issues surrounding poverty.

The reality is that to eradicate poverty all 3 entities, family’s schools and the community need to remain transparent and communicate. There must be a level of trust that is built as well as a relationship that is one of mutual understanding that each entity is there for one another not for any gain but only as a support to one another.
