For this assignment, you will do three concept sketches using information from the Internet. The three topics and recommended websites for each topic are listed below. For each topic, complete a one page (singled sided) concept sketch that includes the name of the topic and your name. You must do a concept sketch for each of the following topics (for a total of three concept sketches). Remember that a concept sketch consists of a sketch (or series of sketches), labels, and complete sentences written around the sketch describing the important processes or parts of the sketch. Sketches about life and fossils can include sketches of charts and graphs. If you choose to use a chart or graph as your sketch, you must still explain your sketch in full sentences.
Topic 1 Classification of Life (taxonomy): For this topic, you will construct two or more diagrams that show (1) the hierarchy of groups in taxonomy (Kingdom, Phylum, Class, etc), and (2) how different groups of organisms are classified. This second part (2) is commonly done in a manner similar to the branches of a tree. For each of the main groups of organisms you will write a short sentence that describes what types of organisms are represented by this branch. You will not be able to show every group or type of organism, so choose those that are most important.

Topic 2 Changes in Life Over Time: For this topic, you will construct a concept sketch illustrating the main events in the history of life as observed from the fossil record. This sketch will show when the main types of organisms, such as trilobites and dinosaurs, appeared in the fossil record and when they became extinct or whether they are still around today. The change of fossils from older to younger rock layers is commonly called faunal succession, and it is the main way that geologists determine the age of fossil-bearing rock layers.
Topic 3 Processes, Evidence, and Theories of Evolution: For this topic, you will construct a concept sketch that explains (1) some of the modern and ancient processes that can cause organisms to change over time (evolution), (2) observable evidence that organisms have changed over time (as evidenced in the fossil record), and (3) scientific theories that try to explain these changes (that is, theories of evolution).
