Introduction Motivation – is the action toward a desired goal and elicits controls and sustains specific goal-directed behaviours. It can be considered a driving force; that compels or reinforces a step toward the desired goal. We have learned that motivation is the most critical factor of a successful work team. Employers should be aware of the methods and actions which will be useful to motivate their teams to work well. We have also learned that workers are motivated with the right working conditions and high wages, but other types of motivation are connected with a pure desire to act in difficult circumstances. Motivation is the essential factor of productive work, so every manager who expects to encourage their teams to exceed the goals should motivate their employees in several significant and positive ways. Case Study the Golden Apple Franchise of Restaurants Chen is the dishwasher at the Golden Apple Restaurant currently owned by the Golden Apple Franchise of Restaurants. He has worked at the establishment ever since it was initially the Alberton Cafeteria. Robert and Jasmine Raveendran the owners of the Alberton Cafeteria, hired Chen to work at the cafeteria. Chen was the cafeteria’s first dishwasher since opening. When the Golden Cafeteria was purchased from the original owners by the Golden Apple Company Chen was asked to stay on as dishwasher. No one seemed to know precisely how old Chen was, and the original owners nor the staff ever invested interest in getting to know his age or situation. He was thought to be about 60 years of age by the current team when questioned. His original application was lost in the buyout, and a new one had never been completed since payroll records were in good order. If he had any family, the management or staff did not know them. Many of the original staff hired by Robert and Jasmine, continued working with the new management of the Golden Apple Restaurant, similar to Chen’s employment. Chen could barely read and write. He could, however, wash pots and pans at a fantastic rate of proficiency and accuracy. Chen had always been a minimum wage hourly employee. The only raise that Chen had received in his long history with Alberton Cafeteria, and now Golden Apple Restaurant was government-regulated were increased to minimum wage. Chen’s schedule had always been to work a split shift from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm and 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Monday through Saturday and worked 36 hours per week. Part-time Golden Apple Restaurant employees received no benefits. A full-time employee was someone who worked 44 hours a week at the regular time according to labour standards. The Golden Apple’s only
full-time employees are managers. Full-time employees are provided with a meal and a benefits package. All other employees paid half price for all food and did not receive benefits. Water, coffee and tea were free to all employees. Employees paid half price for any other beverage. The level of pilferage and theft at the Golden Apple Restaurant was a constant challenge for managers (there had been four general managers in the property in the past 12 months) and constant conflict with staff and customer dissatisfaction of service delivered. When the district manager of the franchise caught Chen eating a piece of fried chicken in the wash ware-room, he informed the manager that Chen had stolen the food and that he was to be fired immediately and escorted from the premises. The general manager stated that Chen had not taken the chicken. He said that he had given Chen the piece of chicken and a soft drink the district manager had not even noticed, as a reward for his hard work during a hectic shift that morning. The district manager expressed concern about the precedent that would be set by giving free food to employees as a means of reward. He told the general manager he would have to pay for the items himself at full price. The general manager paid for the details as instructed. The general manager gave his termination of employment notice the next morning.
