Start by reading and following these instructions: You are responsible for minimally at least 3 posts for each question in your discussion boards; your initial post and reply to two of your classmates. Your initial post(s) should be your response to the questions posed in the discussion question. You should research your answer and cite at least one scholarly source when appropriate, and always use quality writing. The discussion board is never a place to use text language or emoticons. You will also be asked to respond to your classmates. This is designed to enhance the academic discussion around the topic. It is all right to disagree with something posted by another, however your responses should always be thoughtful and respectful and reflect your opinions professionally. Discussion Question: You are working as a statistician with the Boston Police department. You were given this case to work on to see if there is enough data to support an arrest warrant. Kristen Gilbert started working at the VAMC as a nurse in 1989. A proficiency report obtained by the Boston Police Department, which described her as “highly skillful”, calm, and compassionate. She organized charity drives, collections for the needy, and organized a memorial service for a colleague who died of cancer (CBS News, Killer Nurse Gets Life, 2009). However, Gilbert did tend to be nearby when patients died. Coworkers sometimes referred to her as the “angel of death”. Eventually her fellow nurses grew suspicious. Gilbert’s coworkers stated to raise concerns about an increase in medical emergencies (codes) and deaths in Ward C between August 1995 and February 1996. A criminal investigation was launched in February and Gilbert left her job shortly after learning she was the target of the investigation. The search warrant of hospital records showed that on Ward C between January 1, 1995 and February 19, 1996 Gilbert was present or on duty for 40 codes which ended in death. As the statistician for this case answer the following question What information would you need to see if there is an association between Gilbert being on duty and code/death rates? What other explanations might there be for why Gilbert had more deaths on her shifts? What type of statistical test would you use for this case to see if there is an association? What are your null hypotheses and alternative hypotheses? The following is an analysis of 1641 eight-hour shifts. Use this data to decide if there is enough statically support for an arrest warrant. (Use 95% confidence interval) Deaths during shift? 46. State the alternative hypothesis:

47. You will reject the H0 if _______________

48. The calculated test statistic is _____.

49. At 5% level of significance, the critical value of the test statistic is____

50. At 5% level of significance, there is sufficient evidence to conclude what?

Hypothesis Test Answer to question one The information that is needed to see whether there is an association between Gilbert being on duty and deaths is data table showing the number of deaths when Gilbert is on shift and when he is not on shift and the total number of patients in a shift. Answer to question two On the other hand, the deaths could have just occurred during Gilbert’s shift by coincidence or chance. Sometimes relationships of occurrences do not mean causation. Answer to question three The statistical test to be used in this case is chi-square test of association. This is because we are dealing with categorical data which is in form of a contingency table. Chi-square always tests for independence of occurrences. Answer to question three Hypothesis H0: There is no association between Gilbert’s presence and occurrence of patients’ deaths during his shift. H1: There is a significant association between Gilbert’s presence and occurrence of patients’ deaths during his shift. Alpha = 0.05
