My vision for the future of informatics in nursing practice is to see these systems to continue to excel. Throughout this course we have research different reasons why informatic systems are needed in the healthcare settings. We also look into reason why these systems fail in healthcare settings. As these systems continue to develop there is a lot of room for growth and security related to these systems. It is known that technology is forever evolving and developing but as we move forward with technology there will be changes in the way information is collection with information systems in healthcare setting. Health information systems will evolve to where it will allow the nurses and healthcare team into spend more time with their patients.
Working in any healthcare setting it is known that nurses spending most of their time documenting. When health information systems were developed it was said that this system will cut time down from documenting and nurses will have more hands-on time with patient. Even thought this may be true in some facilities but it is not across the board. Documentation in information system can take just as long or even longer then paper documenting related to actual wed browser support and system communication abilities. For the future of nursing informatic I envision these systems becoming more time saving and convenient.
Technology has advance to the point that you can talk to text. If the system is in accordance with HIPPA and the nurse is aware of their surroundings, I believe this feature will be ideal for nursing documentation (Moore & Frye, 2020). This will assist with reducing the time it takes to document and allowing the nurse to collect pertinent information while assessing the patient. This feature can be sensitive to its user and require a passcode to access this system. These security boundaries will help ensure a second layer of protection for anyone trying the hack the system or input false information into the medical record.
As these systems continue to develop, the vision I have for the future of nursing informatics is continuing to evolve with technology. I have realized not all current healthcare facilities utilize technology systems but as we are moving closer to that era these systems will continue to develop. Nurses are the primary users of the system and spend the most time interacting with these systems (Nelson & Staggers, 2014). Recognizing the pros and cons of the system will mostly be identified by nurses working on the units with the system (Nelson & Staggers, 2014). Not becoming complacent in our studies and work will help nurses become more involved with the development of these systems and make them easier for use in our work settings.
In health care and nursing practice, informatics entails the integration of nursing science with various aspects of analytical and information sciences to define, identify, communicate, and manage information, data, wisdom, and knowledge in nursing practice and health care (Yaşar & Akten, 2018). Since its invention, informatics has and is still significantly changing the face of nursing practice and health care. With the consistent advancements in technology, health care providers and facilities can collect, organize, leverage, and analyze data more effectively, hence enhancing the quality of health care delivery. Besides, the application of informatics in health care and nursing has ensured effective management of organization resources and multiteam operations. This paper will discuss the vision and the future of informatics in nursing practice.
The integration of informatics in nursing practice has significantly enhanced healthcare delivery quality in health care settings. Though the scope of nursing practice remains unchanged, the incorporation of health informatics has greatly enhanced the health care professionals’ daily work, particularly on patient care. It has enhanced the communication and accuracy of patient care and data (Saputra & Arif, 2019). The reliance on patient data in making therapeutic health interventions in health care settings is undebatable. Improving the accuracy of such patient data, particularly regarding their health profile, is crucial in enhancing the quality of health care intervention. With such positive impacts in health care aimed at providing patient-centered care, the future of informatics calls for retainment in the field of nursing practice to continue realizing such positive health outcomes (Saputra & Arif, 2019).
Moreover, nursing practice is rapidly changing to cope with the constant new challenges and advancements in health care. Besides, the nursing profession is still faced with the same changes. As health care providers, nurses are at the forefront health care providers that are directly involved in the provision of patient care; thus, they are directly affected by these changes in technological advancements and their associated challenges. Yaşar and Akten (2018) assert that the incorporation of nursing informatics is one of the primary solutions to counteracting the impact of these changes. Thus, the integration of informatics in health care will continue to take place. Most importantly, the future of nursing practice and health care would require the incorporation of nursing practice.
Some of the major challenges in nursing practice include the increasing prevalence and incidence of chronic illnesses like diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and pulmonary illnesses, the aging population and their associated need for critical care, and the shortage of specialized nurses and doctors. These are core problems in health care that require an extraordinary approach to mitigate, control, manage, or rather possible eradicate them. Despite the diversity in these challenging health concerns, a common solution to address them involves effective data entry, analysis, and storage (Yaşar & Akten, 2018). Achievement of such a solution can only be arrived at upon implementation and utilization of health informatics. Therefore, this is a clear indicator that the vision of informatics in nursing practice would involve correction of health care challenges and problems through proper data management and analysis to produce realistic and achievable goals and interventions (Saputra & Arif, 2019).
In conclusion, health informatics would continue with their positive usefulness in nursing practice to effectively cope with rapidly changing technological advances and its associated challenges. Health care providers and organizations would propose implementing and incorporating informatics in nursing practice to significantly enhance the quality of health care delivery to patients. Management of chronic illnesses, offering quality critical care to the geriatric population, and shortage of specialized health care providers are some of the current and possible future health concerns and challenges that would anticipate the need for incorporation of informatics in nursing practice.
The Departments of Health in Broward County and Deerfield are at the forefront of healthcare provision to residents of Deerfield Beach. 80.6% of residents of Deerfield Beach have health insurance coverage half of whom are on employee plans and one quarter on Medicaid (Data USA, 2020). Another quarter is on Medicare and the rest on non-group and military VA plans (Data USA, 2020). The percentage of insured persons declined between 2017-18 from 21% to 19.4% across the city. Gadsden County has the highest prevalence of DM at more than ¼ with Liberty having the highest prevalence rates of obesity at nearly 40% of the population.
The major strengths of Deerfield City related to health care and wellness have to do with the many healthcare programs that are provided in part by the federal, state, and county governments. The city of Deerfield has several programs which are intended to increase healthy behaviors and levels of wellness among its population. The women, infant, and children program which is part of the Broward county program is intended to provide women, infants, and children with healthy foods at no cost for persons that qualify. The program has benefited thousands of pregnant and breastfeeding women, infants up to 12 months, and children below five years. The program also includes breastfeeding support and immunization programs.
As part of comprehensive care, the city has a department of environmental health that works to assure a safe and healthy environment and set regulations and standards for monitoring, education, and regulation, and prevention of diseases. The department monitors environmental and health status to help identify and solve community environmental health issues. Most if not all residents have access to family planning services allowing residents of the city to anticipate and attain the desired number of children and space and time such births as they want (Broward Health, 2021). Residents have access to several family planning and related services including annual family planning physical exams, birth control options, free condoms, HIV testing and counseling, male and female sterilization, pap smear, pregnancy testing, and counseling and STD screening and treatment. The residents of Deerfield enjoy immunization and preventive health programs facilitated by the Broward County department of health. This provides routine immunization to vaccination programs for children and adults to decrease the risk of preventable diseases. There are up to 16 immunizations for children and adolescents and additional programs for older persons as necessary.
My immediate hope for Deerfield is an increased number of persons getting insured. Health insurance facilitates access to healthcare at affordable prices paid as health coverage premiums and covers patients from catastrophic spending. Increased health coverage will prevent the 20% of uninsured populations from being locked out from critical health care services. On the other hand, being insured will encourage preventive steps such as immunizations, screening for disease, and rehabilitative and curative care access. Health insurance is essential to affordable health care. Gaps in healthcare insurance have negative impacts on individuals and societies.
In this course, I identified strongly with several things in healthcare. It was clear to me that there are significant gaps in healthcare and segments of the population. These gaps often impact the healthcare of entire segments of the population and carry on to affect other elements of their lives. These segments of the population need to have specific plans that address these gaps.
Every community strives to achieve and maintain a healthy population. Improving community healthcare is one of the ways of achieving the highest health stability of patients. To better understand health conditions in Miami, its community health care is analyzed based on the patients’ population and the prevalence of certain medical conditions.
The majority of the patients visiting Miami health centers are male patients. Most of the male patients are suffering from various lifestyle obstacles such as drug abuse, addiction, mental health difficulties, homelessness, illiteracy, and lack of adequate work skills (Zhang et al., 2019). The majority of the patients in these medical centers are black or have African-American origin. Most patients are between sixty and seventy years old. Out of a sample of 846 patients, 76% are male while 24% are female (Zhang et al., 2019). Therefore, the majority of patients with health-related issues in Miami are males.
Prevalence of the medical conditions.
The most prevalent medical condition in Miami is mental and psychological disorders. Most of the population suffers from mental problems and behavioral diseases. Circulatory diseases are the second most common condition prevalent in Miami. Elevated blood pressure also accounts for a high number of patients with circulatory disorders, about 92% of patients suffer from hypertension (Zhang et al., 2019). Based on gender categories, males recorded the highest number of mental illness disorders. Males also show a high prevalence of nervous system disorders and dental problems, while female patients show a high percentage of genital-related diseases, mainly infections along the urinary tract (Zhang et al., 2019). Overall, male patients dominate the number of patients with mental and dental problems while females dominate the urology department.
Prevalence of mental and psychological disorders.
The majority of the population in Miami suffers from mental health problems. The mental health problems most commonly seen include anxiety, alcohol and drug abuse, post-traumatic stress disorder, and attention disorder. Approximately 20% of the patients admitted were diagnosed with at least one mental health disorder (Zhang et al., 2019). The majority of the population suffering from depression are male, while there is a balanced prevalence between the male and female gender for the other health conditions.
The introduction of mobile health clinics has strengthened the health community in Miami. Mobile clinics have been effective in helping reach the vulnerable population and those living in rural areas by delivering healthcare close to their homes (Yu et al., 2017). Mobile health clinics tackle both medical and social problems while providing accessible and cost-effective healthcare to the population.
The Miami health community plans to introduce programs aimed at nurturing children and the youth to cope with life and develop positive and healthy lifestyles. These programs connect the children with educational resources and information that guide them towards life nourishment (Home, n.d.). Miami wishes to nourish children and their families to support the groups focused on ensuring the population’s wellbeing.
It is alarming the number of vulnerable communities that exist in Miami, who do not have medical health insurance coverage. These patients have limited health options within their reach and are forced to depend on mobile clinics to resolve their health problems.
