Personal Protection Equipment Policy or “PPE” policy was the policy I chose that is the most relative to my most current position as a Medical Surgical /Telemetry nurse assigned to the Covid-19 units at my hospital. We are currently experiencing a pandemic that has claimed the lives of many people not just across the nation but worldwide. It’s the first time that not only are those who are responsible for providing care wear PPE but the general population as well.

Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends the use of PPE when coming into contact with pathogens that are communicable. The forms of PPE are listed as gowns, gloves, googles, face shields, surgical mask and respirators. Employers are required to provide these items to their employees each shift for the safety patients and providers.

The PPE Policy lists on OSHA’s website has many policy’s pertaining to the use of PPE, how to properly where PPE, its limitations removal and proper disposal. This Policy impacts my practice because it’s the policy that not only prevents me from contracting COVID-19 but from spreading to others. Upon my arrival to work each day I have to property Don my PPE before I can take report on my assigned patients. Without proper PPE I cannot safely provide care to my patients.

The required PPE for providers caring for patient on COVID-19 units include gown, gloves, caps googles face mask and face shield. The manner in which I don my PPE on isn’t the only important thing but the way I remove it is just as important to prevent cross contamination. (1910.132 – General Requirements. | Occupational Safety and Health Administration, n.d.)

There are signs placed around my unit displaying the correct way to don and remove PPE. OSHA PPE Policy mentions that PPE are not re-usable however there was a point during the pandemic that hospitals were asking providers to re-use N95 masks and gowns to limit “waste” because of a national PPE shortage. Around my unit there are N95 sterilization bins for used masks to be sterilized and returned to its original owner. Nurses were forced to purchase their own PPE because we were not provided adequate PPE despite the regulations and policy set by OSHA. As a result many nurses resigned and some became critically ill. Health policies have a significant implication on the provision of health care services to the people. There are various health care policies that impact mental health care in the United States. While conducting an internet search, I came across the helping families in mental health crises bill of 2015 HR 2646. The bill was introduced as an update of the 2013 version which did not pass HR 3717. The bill seeks to implement several changes in mental health. Among the sections of the bill is the application of evidence-based practice (EBP) and innovative programs. Under the ACT, SAMHSA may give out grants for evidence-based interventions for mental health related challenges. SAMHSA is also required to publish the findings of evidence-based practice to ensure that these findings are accessible to all the professionals that require the information. There are also grant programs and program reevaluation., the grant programs that extend to the financial year 2021 cover suicide prevention across all age groups. There is a program that supports the early intervention for suicide prevention among the youths that extends to the financial year 2021 (Congress.gov. H.R.2646 – 114th Congress (2015-2016). Title III of the act also calls for the formation of an interdepartmental serious mental illness coordination committee. The role of the committee is to report on research, evaluate the impact of the federal programs, and provide a plan that would be instrumental in improving the outcome for individuals, and recommend agency actions that would help better coordinate mental health services. Under Title V of the ACT, SAMHSA must award grants to assertive community programs that handle serious mental health challenges while Title II ensure Medicaid coverage for mental health challenges (Congress.gov. H.R.2646 – 114th Congress (2015-2016). All the titles within the ACT seek to improve access to mental health services and also ensure that the patients receive compassionate and quality care services.

The policy has had a significant impact on the provision of mental health services across the United States. The policy is more holistic and takes to account various issues that have for a long time not been given the consideration that they require. Mental health services in the United States had for a long time not been given the attention that it deserves. There is still more that needs to be done but the progress made has been significant. The recognition of conditions such as substance abuse as part of the mental health challenges has been important in ensuring that the patients receive the care that they need. The provision of more funding towards mental health services has also gone a long way in improving the quality of services provided to the patients. The grants to help fund innovation and evidence-based practice have been instrumental towards the attainment of positive clinical outcome. EBP ensures that health care professionals have access to the most recent scientific findings that help improve the quality of care that the patients receive. According to …resources has been among the challenges facing the implementation of evidence-based practice in the Uni8ted States. With the grants and funding provided under the ACT, the mental health services will be able to improve based on new scientific findings. has proven to have positive health impact for mental health patients and should be adopted. By supporting research, the policy allows for the generation of knowledge on new innovations. The impact of the ACT on mental health services in the United States is thus significant.

Type of Relationship

Research Question

Does the use of telephone-based reminders increase compliance with the daily dosages of insulin in elderly diabetic patients living alone?

Does the use of regular comprehensive skin assessment, in comparison to routine change of patient position alone, lead to reduced cases of pressure wounds in patients on long-term hospitalization?

What is the difference in the incidence of hospital falls for hospitalized patients receiving sedatives and anticonvulsants, which are provided with bedside alarms, and nurses check them frequently in safety rounds, versus those who are only provided with usual routine care?

What are the perceptions of African Americans over 45-years old about the effectiveness of weight management through physical exercises in reducing the prevalence of cardiovascular disease?

Analysis of the Experimental Question

What is the difference in the incidence of hospital falls for hospitalized patients receiving sedatives and anticonvulsants, which are provided with bedside alarms, and nurses check them frequently in safety rounds, versus those who are only provided with usual routine care?

Independent Variable

– Use of bedside alarms and safety rounds

– Normal routine care

hospitalized patients receiving sedatives and anticonvulsants

The rate of hospital falls when the intervention is applied, which entails the provision of bedside alarms and conduction of regular safety rounds, can be determined and compared to when such measures are not used. The difference indicates the effectiveness of these approaches

Dependent Variable

– Incidence of hospital falls

Why the Question is Important

This question is important because of the healthcare burden that results from hospital falls and the challenges that arise from some of the measures employed to mitigate against it. Particularly, in a bid to reduce patient falls, healthcare facilities end up causing unintended consequences on “patient mobility, functional ability, and well-being” (Growdon et al., 2017, p. 759). This situation puts healthcare providers in a dilemma since they have to address the issue of falls, which sometimes results in serious injuries and increases the rate of hospital-acquired conditions (HCAs), but they also have to avoid the negative consequences of immobilized clients. Growdon et al. (2017) note that most of the applied preventive methods reflect a prevailing assumption among healthcare providers and institutions that keeping patients immobilized can eliminate falls. However, they fail to realize that some of the measures are detrimental and increase the chances of patients developing post-hospital syndrome, which is a condition where people become highly vulnerable after being discharged and demonstrate increased functional decline, eventually leading to readmissions.

Therefore, finding an approach that could effectively address the problem of falls while still allowing patients to remain mobile could have far-reaching positive outcomes. Among the measures proposed in research to reduce hospital patient falls include the use of bedside or chair alarms and increased frequency of safety rounds (Shorr et al., 2012). Combining these measures may have the potential of reducing the rate of falls while retaining a reasonable level of mobility, thus eliminating the possibility for post-hospital vulnerability and impaired functionality. Therefore, the study question proposes research to investigate whether applying these interventions in patients at increased risk of falls – those taking sedatives and anticonvulsant drugs – can indeed lead to a reduction in the incidence as compared to a similar group that only receives the usual routine care. The question is also ideal since it has dependent and independent variables and is testable.

Research is a careful analysis using scientific methods on a specific issue or concern. “Research is a systemic survey to describe, expound, forecast, and control the phenomenon observed,” according to the American Sociologist Earl Robert Babbie. In the caregiving affiliation, most of the research is conducted using questions. Ideally, research questions that relate to my field of practice entail; how do psychiatric hospital unit designs affect the frequency of patients’ aggression? What are Native American patient expectations about the timing, place, and costs for weight loss therapy, and how can meeting these preferences affect participation? How many nurse practitioners will the US need in 2020? What are the patient expectations of native American countries regarding the timing, place, and cost of weight-loss counseling?

For instance, the Native American patient’s expectations about the timing, place, and costs for weight loss therapy? How can meeting these preferences affect participation. This question has both dependent and independent variables (Cathy, 2015). The dependent variables include time. Timing of the service is a dependent variable since it depends on when both the patient and the nurse or the physician are available. The patient can be available, and the caregiver or the doctor absent. Or the affiliation can be ready, but the client is absent. Time here becomes a dependent variable since it is affected by other factors.

Meeting the preferences of the patient is another dependent factor that is present in this research question. Meeting the preferences is dependent on other issues, such as the cost of meeting them. Distance and time can also affect the meeting of the patients’ preferences. To meet the patients’ requirements depends on many other factors that can make the affiliation fail or meet them. Availability of skilled labor and the lack of capital can make these needs almost impossible to meet them. For these reasons, meeting the availability of the patient becomes a dependent variable.

The independent variable includes the cost of the treatment. The healthcare affiliation sets the standard cost of treatment with all the patients. Whether the patient is available or not, the cost of treatment will not change. The cost remains constant no matter what, thus an independent variable (Peterson, 2019). The place of treatment can be both a dependent or an independent variable. The machines used cannot be relocated, and the affiliation offering the services is one, and the place becomes an independent variable. This is because the patient can only get medication from that same place. When their other available source of the same service or the machines can be relocated, the place becomes dependent.

The population being addressed in this question is the native Americans who want to lose weight. These people might be overweight or obese. Those people who are plump are the population being addressed in this question. The testability of this question is very high. The question is addressing a common problem with Native Americans. Ideally, in testing this question, several methods can be used. One of the methods is using questioners or sampling.

The question is interesting since it has a wide range of reviews. The information that can be acquired from this question is primary. The government can use the same information in focusing on other crucial problems affecting the native Americans.
