Module 13 Assignment- 100 words Only

Module 14 Discussion

Describe the four steps of the public health approach toward injury prevention in your text and discuss at least one successful strategy that has been implemented to prevent injuries to either children or elderly population. Explain why public health use the term, ‘unintentional injury’ instead of ‘accident’?

 Module 13 Discussion

  1. View the hour-long 2008 California Newsreel documentary video “Unnatural Causes: In Sickness and In Wealth,” which tells the story of several individuals and the impact that their social situation has on their overall health and well-being.
  2. Discuss the documentary with your assigned group. Consider the testimonies of the people that were interviewed in the documentary with regard to such things as: how one’s living environment can affect their risk for chronic conditions, how income and education is related to the health of populations, how chronic stress is involved in the process of disease development, etc

Module 13 Assignment

Review the assigned module readings on health and human rights. From the OCHA website select one of the many featured stories. Now, put yourself in a reporter’s shoes that is interviewing the author/protagonist of the story you picked. Write two social media posts (100 words each) that you would write before and after the interview.

  1. The pre-post should refer to the location and the potential issue you are going to address.
  2. The post after the interview summarizes how the interview went and relates it to human rights.

Include at least two in-text citations (total) to attribute the information you are reporting. Include at least two in-text citations to attribute the information you are reporting. In-text reference citations e.g., (Author, Date) should be used for attribution when summarizing content (see the guidance provided in the Additional Resources folder on the course home page). A full reference citation is not required for this assignment.

The documentary video “Unnatural Causes: In Sickness and In Wealth” discussed the impact that different social and living situations can have on individual’s overall well-being. This documentary was overall shocking, especially where it discusses the lack of health care among individuals living in the United States. The documentary states that the reason for so many illnesses is not related to the lack of health care but rather the average American diet or individual behaviors. This puts Americans at risk for many chronic conditions; such as heart disease, increased stress levels, and even diabetes. Low income Americans have a higher risk for developing these illnesses due to poor social conditions and poor living conditions. Education levels also have a high impact on health; the documentary also states that college graduates live, on average, 2.5 years longer than high school graduates. Overall this documentary is interesting and really makes you think about health care around the world.

The documentary video listed discusses the impact that different social and living situations can have on an individual’s overall health and well-being. I found this documentary interesting, especially the part where it discusses the lack of healthcare among individuals living in the United States, however states that the reason for so many illnesses isn’t related to lack of healthcare but rather the American diet or individual behaviors such as having easy access to smoking or unhealthy foods. This puts Americans at risk for chronic conditions such as diabetes and heart disease, as well as increased stress levels. Low income Americans have an even higher risk for developing these illnesses due to poor living and social conditions. Education also has an impact on health, stating that college graduates live, on average, 2.5 years longer than high school graduates, however the high cost of college may not be an option for many Americans, making it difficult to find a secure job after high school that will provide them with health insurance.

Describe the four steps of the public health approach toward injury prevention in your text and discuss at least one successful strategy that has been implemented to prevent injuries to either children or elderly population. Explain why public health use the term, ‘unintentional injury’ instead of ‘accident’?

The four steps implemented by the public health field toward injury prevention include: defining the problem, identifying the risk and protective factors, developing and testing prevention strategies, and assuring widespread adoption. Defining the problem an important first step in any injury prevention, because we can address how large the injury problem is, where it is, and who it affects. Identifying the risk and protective factors is a crucial second step in injury prevention, because we need to know “why” it is happening and what factors help protect individuals from it. For the third step, developing and testing prevention strategies, it is important to use all the data and information collected in the previous two steps and put it into fruition. Also, it is important to observe results in this step and see if the strategy is working. Lastly, assuring widespread adoption is important for widespread usage and acceptance as a known preventative measure.

The four steps of the public health approach regarding injury prevention are define the problem, identify risk and protective factors, develop and test prevention strategies, and assure widespread adoption. The first step of defining the problem means that you have to gather data and analyzing datasets for patterns and trends. Next is identify risk and protective factors. Risk factors are the variables that increase the probability of the occurrence of an injury and protective factors are those that reduce the probability of an injury. After that is develop and test prevention strategies. Prevention strategies are methods to prevent the occurrence of future injuries. Finally, is assure widespread adoption, which is the successful prevention strategies are disseminated widely in order to encourage their adoption on a larger scale. Well being that one of the major types of unintentional injuries to children is drowning, because of this one of the successful strategies that have been implemented to prevent injuries is to put fencing around pool to prevent children from wondering into the pool unsupervised. Even though they both have very similar definitions Public health professionals use the term unintentional injury instead of accident because they are understandable and preventable, with an accident the risks are identified and injury still happens
