Media culture is the culture formed due to mass media influence. The media culture concept infers its influence on society’s consumption of information and intellectual direction. Media culture is a main element in forming ordinary culture because it affects society’s tastes, morals, opinions, attitudes, and accessibility of information (Kellner, 2019). Media culture is greatly influenced the new media platforms. The mass media plays a central role in communicating political information which is an important process.
Media culture and politics
The mass media gives the public a foundation of understanding past, current, and upcoming events. There is a broad discussion about the character and extent of the mass media’s impact on politics. Some people see the media as a facilitator of democracy by allowing a diverse range of views and opinions to be expressed. Others believe that the media are against democracy because they use their power to influence the way people view politics both locally and internationally. Critics have accused the media of trivializing politics because they are competing for viewership and readership from a limited number of audiences hence treating news as entertainment as opposed to as serious business.
The new media platform is vibrant and has continued to grow in a way that has serious consequences for politics and governance (Calderaro, A. (2018). The new political media produces, disseminates, and exchanges political content on networks and platforms that encourage collaboration and interaction. The new media, which have evolved rapidly in the last three decades, have diverse implications on political practices and democratic governance. They have drastically changed the way government institutions function and political leaders communicate. They have also redefined the role of journalists and changed the political-media system. They have redefined how citizens participate in politics and the way elections are contested hence complicating the political-media system. The legacy media, which comprises of Television, radio, and newspapers, coexist with the media (social media, digital apps, video-sharing platforms, blogs, and websites) which are constantly growing in inventive ways. The new media can convey content straight to people without the mediation of institutional or editorial gatekeepers which are fundamental to traditional media. As a result, the new media have presented a high rate of unpredictability and instability in the political communication process (Calderaro, A. (2018).
Generally, the media play numerous vital roles in democratic civilizations. Their principal aim is to update the public and provide citizens with the information they need to make informed decisions concerning policy and leadership. The media serve as watchdogs for scrutinizing government activities. They set the public agenda for discussing matters and provide a platform for people to express their political concerns. The media assist in the building of communities by helping people to identify civic groups, finding common causes, and working toward finding solutions for the challenges in society (Enli, 2017). The media provide unparalleled access to information and can reach even the uninterested audiences via personalized, peer to peer channels such as Facebook. The average people have joined forces with the established press to execute the watchdog role and this has subjected public officials to greater scrutiny. With the new media, events, and issues that are outside the purview of mainstream media are being exposed by ordinary citizens, and the public is engaged in political activities.
Why is the Topic Relevant?
This topic is relevant because politics and government touch almost every area of our lives and knowing what is happening in the political realm help one to take the best actions for them and their lives. Knowing about politics is also important because it helps the electorate to make informed decisions when they elect their leaders. Without the media, it is hard to learn about politics and government because it is the role of the media to inform the public about what is happening in politics and government both locally and internationally.
